Aussie Pub Musicians

What makes performing in a pub so uniquely Australian?

Join Aaron Moss and Zachary Marriott as they explore the intersection of Australian pub culture and the performing arts. The boys sat down with performers Ben Portnoy and Justin Hardy to celebrate pub culture and the way that it has nurtured growing musicians and performers throughout Australia.

Ben Portnoy is a 27-year-old male from Sydney Australia. In between working set design, Ben plays all around the country and beyond in multiple Sydney based rock’n’roll bands. These include C.O.F.F.I.N (Children of Finland Fighting in Norway), White Dog and Research Reactor Corporation. Ben has also recently joined the live show for garage outfit Satanic Togas.

“I’ve played a handful of international tours which have been great, but I always miss playing at the pub. Your just so engaged and connected with the crowd.”

Justin Hardy (first photo on the right) is a 22-year-old who performs under the DJ alias of Hardy. Justin grew up in the suburb of Berowra and has been producing and Djing since the age of 16. He regularly performs at a variety of venues both big and small around Sydney including the Ivy and Bondi Beach Road Hotel.

“You get a lot more engagement with the crowd. You can see all their faces and you can adjust what or how you are playing based off their reactions. It’s a lot more intimate.”
